Sisters of Mirthy

London Field’s Radio’s alternative to Women’s Hour sees presenter-sisters Zoe and Becky bake up a sonic storm of music and debate, offering an alternative dose of feminism for Hackney-based grrrls.

Broadcasts from Sisters of Mirthy:

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 8

Boys, grrrls and everyone in between get the attention in this hot and sweaty August edition. New York’s finest performance artist Penny Arcade destroys second wave feminism, witnesses the start of riot grrl in Olympia and inspires the Sisters to play tracks by their favourite boys for once.

The Wilton Way Café Jubilee Special: 1960s

The Wilton Way Café and London Fields Radio present a special series of podcasts from 1902 to 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee ahead of their free street party on Sunday June 3.

Presenters on Hackney’s micro radio station count down the eras, from the 1900s to 2000s, commemorating the best (and worst) of the decade with music, commentary and LFR’s distinct DIY flavour.

In this episode, LFR’s riot grrrl siblings, Sisters of Mirthy, take you on a feminist tour of the sixties, where second wave girls were fighting dirty. It started with the SCUM manifesto, written by certifiable feminist Valerie Solanas in ’67, who called on all women to overthrow their captors, and ended in 1969, which was “the year of the militant woman”.

>> NB: You will need to turn this podcast down at the start and up after 10 seconds. Sorry! <<

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 7

What do riot grrls do on their day off? Hang around pool halls and muse on the big questions, that’s what. Like ‘where are all the professional female snooker players?’. Also, In honour of any Hackney grrl who’s ever grown sick of neatly cleaning and stacking their empty beer cans, the Sisters get busted by the recycling man. Plus, a rare play of the London Women’s Musicians Collective girls Lottie and Ada’s anti bondage cover of these boots are made for walking.

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 6

Inspired by the inimitable Pauline Black, of The Selecter, the sisters go 2 Tone mental for a ska grrl special. Hear Pauline herself talk about how the politics and polo shirts of the 60s and 70s made her the coolest ska girl in town, and skank til you drop to the rock steady sounds of The Mo- Dettes and the Bodysnatchers.
