Our Current Affair, Vol. 1

A new current affairs show led by Alex Hudson. For the first, he asks ‘What do spending cuts mean for the arts?’.

England’s arts budget is taking a 30% cut. There has been outcry from the frontline of arts institutions about fear of closure and having to pitch for funding but the Royal Academy of Art – a national, if not world leader in the arts – has never taken a penny from the public purse and it still continues to flourish. So what’s the answer? And do we need art for art’s sake funded by the taxpayer?

Arts and Culture Select Committee member Philip Davies MP discusses the extent to which the government should work with artistic and cultural institutions, the “value” of art and how spending plans could affect the arts in East London and across England with a healthy dose of indie music to boot.
