Music by Numbers

Music By Numbers takes you on a journey through the history of music. Starting in 1979 and taking on one year at a time, Shyam and Alan review the artists and tracks that made their mark on that year, and how they have influenced music today. They aren’t always old enough to remember the year, but they have help on hand from a variety of sources (including Alan’s dad) to help bring the year back to life.

Music by Numbers: 1983, Vol. 5 by London Fields Radio on Mixcloud

Another birthday special this month (promise it’s the last) so as expected, it’s full of humble introspection from the boys as we celebrate Alan’s special year. Aside from Baldrick forcing us to play more cross-dressing new romantics than we would ever choose to do so, Alan grills his dad on why he had a porno ‘tash, Shyam tries to claw back some credibility by winning this year’s soundclash, we try to share some hip hop learnings with our listeners by playing Grandmaster Flash’s urban hymn, and end with some broken beats from Flying Lotus! Phew! How long was that sentence! Long!

Music By Numbers: 1982, Vol. 4

Music By Numbers: 1982, Vol. 4 by London Fields Radio on Mixcloud

It’s a birthday special this month as 1982 is the year Shyam breathed life, and like the year, it’s full of surprises and awkward pauses. Classic beats from Gregory Isaacs, Prince, Soul II Soul and Men At Work (that’s right) politely drown out inappropriate references to child fondlers, we have a guest in the café with us to help determine the winner of this week’s soundclash, and Alan’s dad recounts an amazing story involving printer paper and Kim Wilde. Oh yes 1982, take a bow.

Music By Numbers: 1981, Vol. 3

Shyam and Alan have crash landed into the 80s and in full flow this month, dropping mad bombs from Prince, Rick James, Hall & Oates and The Specials. Alan is noticeably worried by the prospect of rippling the mellow vibe of Wilton Way café by playing a grime banger, Shyam gets very excited by his choice in this week’s soundclash and we finish off with a long-player classic from the godfather of hip hop. As always, Alan’s dad drops in and excites / embarrases them with some classics, and we discuss what it was like being nothing but a glint in our parents eye in 1981. Whoop!

Music by Numbers, Vol. 2

Music By Numbers takes you on a journey through the history of music. Starting in 1979 and taking on one year at a time, we review the artists and tracks that made their mark on that year, and how they have influenced music today. Shyam and Alan aren’t always old enough to remember the year, but they have help on hand from a variety of sources (including Alan’s dad) to help bring the year back to life.

This month, chronological voyagers Shyam and Alan enter a new decade by reminiscing on 1980.  They get a little too excited about the prospect of playing Black Uhuru and Sylvia Striplin, Shyam confidently takes on Alan with a disco gem in this week’s soundclash, and they don’t play YMCA. Bonus. As always, Alan’s dad drops in and soundbombs them with some classics (that he knows all the words to) and the year is wrapped up nicely with a floating gem from Gil Scott Heron. Enjoy.
